SEPTIC SYSTEMS

Common Questions About Your System

How long do septic systems last?

Septic systems are designed to provide long-term, effective treatment of household waste when properly maintained. Most premature failures are due to neglect. Common issues include pipe blockages from tree roots and structural deterioration of the tank — but the most serious and expensive problem is a clogged drainfield. Once the absorption field is clogged, it must be replaced and can cost thousands of dollars.

How often should I pump my septic tank?

It depends on tank size, the number of people in your household, and the type of solids going in. Generally, every 3 to 5 years — though more complex systems may need more frequent service. If you're unsure, have it inspected and ask for a recommendation. Write down the schedule and keep it with your home maintenance records.

PRO TIP

Keep a maintenance log with your last pump date and recommended next service. It protects your system and investment.

WHAT TO AVOID

What should not be flushed?

What should be be flushed down the toilet?

Flush only human waste and toilet paper. Everything else can damage your system — including dental floss, cat litter (even "flushable" varieties), hair, Kleenex, cigarette butts, cotton swabs, feminine hygiene products, condoms, paper towels, static cling sheets, diapers, and disposable wipes.

RULE OF THUMB

If it is not toilet paper, it does not belong in the toilet!

PRICING

How much does pumping cost?

How much will it cost to pump my tank?

Pumping starts at $375 and up. Pricing varies based on whether the tank access lids are exposed and the location of the tank on the property. The average tank holds 1,000 gallons.

Will additives like Rid-X help me go longer without having to pump my system?

No. Adding stimulators or enhancers to a septic tank is not necessary. The bacteria needed for your system to function are already present naturally. According to the U.S. Department of Health, none of these products eliminate the need for routine maintenance and pumping.

NOTE

Having your lids pre-exposed before service can reduce your cost. Ask us about this when you call.
